There are numerous locations across the country offering varied hiking trails. These trails vary in the distance as well as endurance levels. Some venues also offer other activities including restaurants or game viewing. The options to choose from are endless. These are some of the best hiking trails in Gauteng.

Cradle Moon Lakeside GameLodge

Cradle Moon Lakeside Game Lodge is situated in Muldersdrift in Gauteng which is approximately forty (40) minutes away from Sandton, Johannesburg. There are a variety of animals which can be found in the conservancy. And these include the zebra, rhino, kudu, leopard, eland and many many more.

Activities at the Lakeside Lodge:

Hiking, Cycling and Trail Running

There are four different hiking trail routes available for mountain biking and hiking through the cradle moon lakeside game lodge with varying distances available to suit different fitness levels. And this lodge offers over fifty kilometres of trails to be enjoyed. The lodge is an ideal spot for hiking in the Muldersdrift area, Johannesburg.

Rates:

Bands for activites are available for purchase at the Activities Centre:

  • Hiking R70.00 per person
  • Mountain biking R70.00 per person
  • Bike Hire R200.00 per bike
  • Trail running R70.00 per person

Therefore, these rates include the R50.00 conservancy fee.

Faerie Glen Nature Reserve

Faerie Glen Nature Reserve is located in Pretoria East in Gauteng which is approximately forty (40) minutes away from Sandton, Johannesburg. At the reserve, there are a few game animals which can be seen on the trails and these include the impala, red hartebeest and zebra. There are also numerous bird species for bird lovers to view.

Activities at the Nature Reserve:

Hiking, trail running, Birdwatching

There are three different hiking trail routes available for hiking through the Faerie Glen Nature Reserve with varying distances available to suit various fitness levels. Therefore these trails range from easy to difficult.

The Hadeda trail is 2,3 kilometre and is considered the easy trail. Thereafter the moderate or medium trail is the Acacia trail and is 3,2 kilometres. The final trail is the Kiepersol trail which is considered to be the most difficult and is 4,2 kilometre in distance. The reserve is an ideal spot for hiking in the Pretoria East area.

Tickets to the reserve are available for purchase at the cashier’s office:

  • Adults – R16
  • Pensioners – R6
  • Children (7 – 12 years) – R6
  • Children (0 – 6 years) – Free

Rosemary Hill

Rosemary Hill is situated in Pretoria in Gauteng which is approximately fifty (50) minutes away from Sandton, Johannesburg. It is an ideal hiking trail in Pretoria.

There are two hiking trail routes that are offered at Rosemary Hill Farm, one of which is a five kilometre route and the other is eleven kilometre one. The routes which can be used are set as a tour of the entire farm and also go through neighbouring farms. There are also a few man-made obstacles to make the route enjoyable.

The routes are dog friendly so people are welcome to bring their dogs with for a stroll through the farm. And please note that dogs need to be on leashes at all times.

In addition to offering great hiking trails, there are other experiences available at the farm which include indulging at their coffee shop or restaurant, having a picnic or visiting their spa.

  • Day pass R30.00 per child
  • Dogs – free

Hazeldean Valley

Hazeldean Valley is situated in Pretoria East in Gauteng which is approximately fifty (50) minutes away from Sandton, Johannesburg. This is an ideal hiking trail, Pretoria.

The hiking trails available at Hazeldean Valley Trails have been designed to ensure that people of all fitness levels can enjoy them. Hazeldean offers over sixty kilometres of trails to enjoy.

Hiking trails distance range from five kilometres to eleven kilometres. Three loops are available which are the bushveld loop, farmland loop, and the river section. The river section is the more technical of all the routes. People have the option of doing these loops either on their own or linking them together to complete a longer distance. All the loops start and finish at the Cowhouse Market.

The routes are dog friendly so people are welcome to bring their dogs with for a stroll through the farm. And please note that dogs need to be on leashes at all times.

The Cowhouse is a food and craft market which is open on a Saturday and Sunday. And at the market, people can choose from a variety of food and drink vendors and on occasion enjoy live music.
