Markets to visit in Durban
There is something exciting about getting dressed up and visiting a flea market or farmer’s market. Maybe it has to do with the unknown goods you will most likely purchase or all the delicious food you will taste. But either way, it’s a fun day out for the entire family. Usually, these flea markets pop up during special occasions like Easter or Christmas so it is tough to find them every month. However, I have put together a list of markets in Durban which are ordinarily opened on a regular weekend.
Musgrave Market
If you are Durbanite, then you have heard of the Musgrave market and have also probably visited it once or twice. If you are not, then you should consider visiting. The market is situated on Stephen Dlamini Road in Berea and has heaps of traders. You will find things from food to clothing to books to plants. There is lots of variety at the Musgrave market. The food stalls range from burgers and shwarmas to Korean fried chicken so you will find something to suit your tastebuds. There is no designated parking area so you will have to park on the street, however, there is parking on the street alongside the market and the area is relatively busy.

I Heart Market
The I Heart Market is another market which you should consider visiting. It’s located at the entrance of the Moses Mabida stadium. The market vendors vary from food stalls offering delicious food and drinks to lifestyle stalls offering clothing and crafts. There is a good variety of vendors to enable you to spend a few hours there. Once you purchase some food, you can chill on the benches or grass while you have the beautiful backdrop of the stadium surrounding the market. There is a limited parking area and also parking available on the street alongside the market.

Umhlanga Farmer’s Market
The Umhlanga Farmer’s Market is a weekly farmer’s market. It can be found in the heart of Umhlanga. And the vendors offer a wide range of fresh produce. You can grab some sourdough bread, fresh fruit, and vegetables, or nuts and baked goods. The market is open for a few hours every week. And since it’s open for a few hours and some of the vendors have their usual customers, if you don’t visit early you may miss out on the produce. The market is held on an empty grassy patch and there is ample parking in the area.

206 Autumn Drive, Prestondale, Umhlanga

Wednesdays – 08:00 am to 12:00 pm

Golden Hours Family Market
The Golden Hours Family Market is one of the bigger markets in Durban and can be found near the Durban North area. The market is a fundraising initiative for the special needs school so it is definitely a worthy cause. It has a large number of stalls and the vendors sell anything from fresh produce, crafts, and statues to books and clothing. There are numerous food stalls offering a spread of ready-made delicacies. The market has live music and an ample seating area where you can enjoy a meal. There is also a kids’ play area which will ensure that your kids are entertained. The market has its own parking area and there is ample parking available. And they also welcome pets at the market.

Most of the vendors at the markets in addition to accepting cash, now accept card payments. They either have a portable card machine or accept SnapScan or Zapper, which is very convenient.
There are lots of markets which can be found in Durban especially during the festive times but if you are looking for some to visit on a usual weekend, then you should definitely check these out.
