Hussar Grill

On a day when the electricity shuts off during lunch time and you haven’t had time to prepare food, the likely alternative is going out for lunch. Friends of ours suggested Hussar Grill at Montecasino to satisfy our hunger. Because Hussar Grill is situated in the outer arena of Montecasino it offers patrons some natural light and an outdoor feel (provided you choose to be seated outside).

Atmosphere

The layout of the restaurant is cosy and welcoming. There is ample seating both inside the restaurant as well as outside if you are wanting some fresh air and sunlight. It is also a child-friendly atmosphere with an exciting kiddies menu available. The staff are also ever willing and ready to accommodate families. As a result of it being situated in Montecasino and it being a wheelchair friendly establishment, Hussar Grill is consequently also wheelchair accessible, I would, however, advise that you be seated outside as there are steps inside the restaurant. The restaurant is situated near the water fountain where children play so it enables you to enjoy your meal whilst watching your children play nearby.

Cuisine

As the name suggests, Hussar Grill specializes in grilled meats which include the usual steak cuts. However, that is not where the menu ends, on offer is also an array of other items to suit different palettes. These range from seafood, chicken and lamb. Menus at restaurants are ever changing and I have linked to their current menu here, Hussar Grill Menu So maybe you can check what is currently on offer.

Drinks

First of all, it was drinks, I chose the Russian Mule which is a cocktail containing vodka, ginger beer and lime juice. This was a rather large drink and costs R 60.00 It was served in a metal jug which ensured that the drink stayed cold for the duration of the meal. The drink itself was crafted beautifully and was neither overpowering nor too sweet. Consequently, it was just the refreshment which was needed for this hot summer’s day.

Starters

As a starter, I chose the peri-peri chicken livers which was accompanied with two slices of crusty bread. The portion size was good so one could easily have this just by itself if you are not particularly hungry. The livers were cooked in a rich peri-peri cream sauce. This ensured that the dish was neither too hot nor too mild. It had just the right balance of flavour coupled with the dreamy creamy texture. All of this toppled onto crusty bead was the perfect match.

My husband, on the other hand, chose the crispy fried squid which was calamari tubes drenched in batter and deep fried. All this was complemented by a tartare sauce. As per usual, I had to taste test his dish as well, so I, therefore, got to sample some of the calamari. As a result, the calamari was fried well and was not overly chewy. And the tartare sauce provided some tartness and contrasted the mild lemony flavour of the calamari tubes.

Mains

Onto the main meal we went, I chose the chicken schnitzel which was accompanied by mash and topped with a pepper sauce. This dish consisted of two chicken schnitzels neatly plated onto a pile of mashed potatoes. The chicken was evenly fried with it being crisp on the outside and soft in the centre. All this delicious chicken with creamy smooth mash and a scrumptious sauce, what more could you ask for. This was a rather large dish and is definitely too much for one person, especially if you have just indulged in a starter (which you have successfully finished). It was both filling and delicious. I ended up eating just one of the chicken schnitzel portions and took the balance as a takeaway.

My husband chose the steak dish for his main and he informed me that it was cooked perfectly. In contrast, his steak was paired with a side of chips and this dish was also a large portion.

Price

Currently, Hussar Grill is having a special and offering patrons a two-course meal for R130.00. This is such a bargain as the portion sizes of the meals are rather large. It is real value for money. The two course does offer set menu items so you have to choose from it. However, if that’s not what you are after you can also choose from their al carte menu.

Service

The service we received throughout our meal was outstanding. Our waiter was knowledgable, eager to assist us and provided us with prompt service. Also, our waiter provided us with a free dessert drink. This was a glass of a chocolate vodka martini which is their signature dessert. Most noteworthy it was a delicious post-lunch treat. This ultimately ensured that we enjoyed every aspect of the experience.

Finally we entirely enjoyed our experience from the delicious food to the efficient and speedy service. I would highly recommend that you give Hussar Grill, a try and experience this for yourself. While we visited the venue at Montecasino, Hussar Grill has various other locations in Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal. Feel free to try out a location near you.
