Guide to Uroa Bay Beach Resort, Zanzibar

Zanzibar has pristine blue beaches with spectacular shorelines coupled with resorts to match. You can have your pick on the type of accommodation you choose. There are options to suit all kinds of budgets. The best options are resorts as they come with a host of facilities so you will not be short of anything. This is a guide on the Uroa Bay Beach Resort in Zanzibar.

Location

Uroa Bay Beach Resort can be found in the town of Uroa. This little town is in the east of the island and is around a forty-five-minute drive from the airport. There are not a lot of shops near the resort however, if you do walk around outside the resort, you will be able to find some local vendors.

The resort is situated along Uroa Beach. When it is low tide you are able to walk on the shoreline all the way to the village. However, once it becomes high tide the ocean completely engulfs the shore and meets the boundary wall of the resort.

Facilities

The Room

Uroa Bay Beach Resort has various types of rooms depending on the room, the amenities differ. We stayed in a garden room on the first floor for 7 nights. The room had an en-suite and a large balcony. The en-suite had a shower, sink, toilet, and bidet. There was also a built-in hairdryer and a wall socket for an electrical appliance. Rooms were cleaned daily by housekeeping with the towels being replaced, beds made, bins cleaned and toiletries being changed.

The room itself contained a wooden bed with a mosquito net, a bench with a clothes rack, a table and chair, a full-length mirror, small TV, a Bar fridge, a bench, and outdoor patio furniture. Basically all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay.

The Resort

Uroa Bay Beach Resort has a 24-hour reception service and all the staff at the resort speak English. In the reception area, there are benches for seating purposes. The resort has shop selling essentials you may have forgotten to carry, a perfume shop, a spa, and a dedicated tour office to make bookings for your activities.

You will also be able to find two restaurants, one serving a set menu for those who booked an inclusive package and a second restaurant serving an al-carts menu. There is also a bar area and ample seating. The resort has two pools, seating around the pool area as well as beach chairs facing the ocean. There is wi-fi available at the resort however, you can only access it in common areas, which starts at reception onwards.

Other Facilities

Upon your arrival, you are presented with a welcome drink, a bracelet (depending on the inclusivity option you chose), and a bag containing your room key, airconditioner remote, and two cards. One card is for the beach towels which you can collect and return at the reception. The other card is for a glass bottle of water as they do not encourage the use of plastic. This glass bottle can be collected at the bar area. The rooms have a ceiling fan and an air conditioner. There is a money exchange office at the resort. All items are charged in US dollars at the resort.

Throughout your stay, whatever you consume will be charged to your room and you need to settle your bill before you leave. The resort accepts cash in dollars or Tanzanian Shillings as well as credit cards. Credit card usage comes with a transaction fee of 4% per use. In addition, you will be charged $1 per person per day as an infrastructure tax which is imposed by the Zanzibar Revenue Board and which the resort pays over to the government.

Highs

Uroa Bay Beach Resort is a four-star resort and you get exactly that. It has everything you could need for an island escape. The facilities are kept well maintained and of a high standard. However, as they do realize that they are not close to the town, they have made provision for that by ensuring that they have everything that you need at the resort.

Recommendation

If you are looking for a quality resort with all the facilities to make your island stay magical, then Uroa Bay Beach Resort should be on your radar. And if you book during the low season the prices are cheaper and the resort is quieter.

Our stay included daily breakfast and the spread was great. It was buffet style with variations on each day.
